In our latest series we learn how to build a chair.
Chair building can require specialist tools and joints that are less familiar to the general furniture maker, so we’re starting out here with a chair that’s in our comfort zone.
This is the first Series in what will become our ‘Chair Building Evolution’.
It’s an introduction to chair making, so we’re building with basic hand tools and methods.
It’s an approachable build, but we’re still going to make sure that it’s a nice piece to have in your home.
We want you to build a chair to be proud of.
But the thing is, we can’t show you what it looks like, because we haven’t designed it yet.
This whole series is a little different to usual, so please watch the video above for a better idea.
What we mean by ‘Live Builds’.
This isn’t live streaming or anything fancy like that.
In fact you’ll experience the videos in very much the same way as usual.
But unlike each Premium Series, which is filmed well in advance and spends months on the hard drive being edited and produced, you’ll be watching the ‘Live Builds’ within a day or so.
We want you to get involved. This will be a Series that will be more insightful and more responsive than usual.
To make this possible you should expect a faster edit and looser feel.
What to Expect.
With this first build, we don’t just want you to watch and learn how to build a chair.
We’ve deliberatly left the design open, so the start of this series will be teaching the process of designing itself.
You’ll learn my odd yet organic steps for designing a piece of furniture that you can apply to any piece that you might be planning to build.
We’ll go through the prototyping together, and take on board any suggestions that you’d like to put forward.
We’ll discuss the joinery choices, learn how to overcome any challeges the design poses, and once satisfied, get on with the build.
Between us we’ll be creating a new design classic. A beautiful chair that’s simple and practical to build with our basic tool kit. You’ll be knocking them out so quickly you’ll have to get them up for sale.
Or failing that we’ll at least come up with something half decent that you’ll be proud to park your arse on.
Live Run Discount –
The final price of the series will be decided once all of the videos are complete, but we know it will be a minimum of £35.00.
As we run live, we’ll be discounting this to £26.00.
You’ll be joining us without seeing the chair itself and we appreciate that, but you will get to be involved in the decisions and have all of your questions answered.
We’re aiming to keep the videos coming out at a minimum of one a week, and there’s a good chance it will be more frequent than this.
As we progress through the series, we’ll update you with more specifics, and that information will be found here.
Getting Started –
The design of the chair is already forming in my head, so we’re getting this Series running without any pre-launch.
Chapter One is already up ready to watch, and Chapter Two will follow in a matter of days.
This is not a replacement to our usual Premium Series, but a response to what people have been asking for. We feel it makes a great way to provide extra insight and will compliment our other style of videos.
P.S Here’s the link to that original post ‘The Three Stooges’.
Not familiar with our Videos?
We make online courses that provide tuition on hand tool woodworking.
The detailed videos can be both streamed and downloaded.
As a professional hand tool woodworker, we aim to get you feeling inspired to build, and equipped with the knowledge to tackle projects entirely by hand.
